About Chiropractic

BackChiropractors focus on the spine and the nervous system and how their imbalances can cause pain. Chiropractors utilize a manual or hands-on form of therapy that involves a series of "adjustments" or "manipulations" to the vertebrae. The expected result of chiropractic treatment is an end to, or relief from, the pain.

What Types of Pain Do They Treat?

A doctor of chiropractic can provide relief for a variety of aches and injuries, including:

  • Whiplash (Car Accidents)
  • Muscle and Joint Pain (Sports Injuries)
  • Back Pain; Disc Problems (Work Injuries, Slips, Falls)
  • Headaches and Neck Pain (Poor Posture, TMJ)
  • Sciatica and Leg Pain
  • Shoulder, Arm, and Hand Pain (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Numbness)
  • Knee Pain (Osteoarthritis)
  • Muscle Spasms (Stress, Tension, Anxiety)

How Do Chiropractors Treat Pain?

Chiropractors use "manipulations" or "adjustments" on vertebrae that have shifted out of alignment. They use their hands to apply a controlled, sudden force to the joints that restores spinal movement. The result is a decrease in pain and improved mobility.

Before setting up an appointment, it is important to contact your insurance company to find out what types of pain management treatments are covered under your policy.

In addition to hands-on adjustments, other drug-free pain relief techniques are often used by chiropractors:

Massage: Kneading and rubbing muscles stimulates blood flow, relieves tension, and improves function.

Ultrasound: High-frequency sound waves generate heat below the skin's surface breaking up tissue deposits.

Electrical Stimulation: An electric current is used to tone muscles, stimulate healing, and ease pain.

Transcutaneous Electrical Stimulation (TENS): An electronic device sends a tiny electrical current through electrodes taped to the skin to nerves at the site of pain. It stops pain messages from being transmitted to the brain.

Heat: Hot packs provide moist heat that increases blood flow and eases pain.

Cold: Cold packs ease pain by restricting blood flow and reducing inflammation in muscles and joints.

Acupuncture: A centuries-old pain relief technique from China that uses tiny needles that are inserted into specific areas of the body. Non-painful sensations created by the needles block pain messages from reaching the brain.
